This remodeling project converted an all-night study area of a College library into a coffee shop. Its bright chrome and neon décor help make the coffee shop a student destination for that side of campus and has increased student traffic to the library upstairs. This Le Corbusier inspired, International Style building with its existing curved exterior walls, prompted the Designer to recall similar forms inside the space.The perforated chrome is used in several applications and is accented by a variety of different light sources.
As a backlit wall material, the perforated chrome shadows come to life on the adjacent curved wall. Chrome furniture was selected to reflect the dramatic wall patterns.
As a horizontal ceiling material, the perforated chrome is both translucent and reflective. Lighting above the suspended chrome gives a translucent appearance while at the same time, blue neon below is reflected off the chrome. The lighting above also casts shadows through the perforations onto the walls. Perforated chrome is also installed vertically at the ends of wall shelves.
Corrugated metal, with a golden factory finish, is applied to all the new curved wall surfaces. A design logic suggests that it be applied only to the curved surfaces because of its' natural bending ability in one direction.
Finally, the MR 16 lamps scattered about the black ceiling suggests a night sky.
