The objective of this design project was to create a durable seat to transform the Richard Schultz 2002 Line outdoor dining chair into a public use chair. The chair's original fabric mesh seat was replaced with the sleek stainless steel perforated seat. The chair's frame and exclusive seat fastening method had to stay the same and the seat had to be able to be removed for quick sling changes. The welded tabs on the bottom of the seat accomplish this task and by loosening four screws the entire seat can be removed and replaced in minutes.
After weeks of designs and prototypes, the final perforated pattern was decided and a prototype chair was assembled. The 316 stainless seat later received a bright electro-polished finish to contrast the bead blasted frame. The chair debuted at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York along with the rest of the Richard Schultz product line. Although this project is not currently in production, it was received well by the trade and public and showcases a unique perforated sheet metal application.
