New White Center Heights Elementary School
The Library for this new school is designed to be the center of the school, physically and philosophically. The space is surrounded by the classrooms and services on three sides, both first and second floor. There are clerestory windows above the second floor, admitting natural light into the corridor and library. The fourth side of the library is a large curved window wall which provides views and admits natural light.

Per building code, the railing on the second floor looking into the library was required to be 42" tall. Perforated panels were the perfect material for the railing panels because they provide an openness and views below for the smallest elementary school students. The metal is preferable to glass for this application because there are no finger prints to be constantly cleaned, no glare on the glass, and the panels were aesthetically appropriate to the design of this building. The panels were powder coated in a "mystic green" color which contributed to the warm northwest color scheme.
