Perforated Accents
Fence Design using western red cedar lumber accented with perforated panels.
I work mostly in the magazine publishing industry, developing project and design ideas for residential settings. One local Meredith publication, Better Homes & Gardens Do-It-Yourself magazine, is going to feature a fence design that I built using western red cedar lumber accented with perforated aluminum panels.
I had seen perforated metal used in industrial environments and always thought it had great potential for residential use. This application seemed ideal, because it's common for the upper portion of a residential fence to feature a different design or material than the lower section, and we wanted to use something unusual. Most fences are accented with wood or PVC lattice panels, which allow some ventilation and a limited view but contribute to privacy when required. Unfortunately, they look generic and ordinary.
The perforated aluminum panels used here provide exactly the same function in a much more creative and stylish fashion, and have already drawn enthusiastic comments from neighbors and visitors to the site. They provide privacy, but allow wind movement and a partial view. These were powder-coated a silver color to retain the look of metal, but other colors would work equally as well. Construction is simple; the aluminum panel edges fit into a narrow slot (sawblade kerf) cut into cedar frames, which are butt-joined at the corners and secured with screws.
