Perforated Metal Display Panels
Introductory Exhibit at Abington Art Center, Jenkintown, PA
These pictures feature an introductory exhibit to the Sculpture Park at Abington Art Center (AAC) in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. The exhibit creates an outdoor "room" for visitors to gather. It is furnished with art furniture by Jack Larimore and a "carpet" of patterned stone that encourages visitors to linger and to prepare for their visit, learning about what they will find on their walk through the 27-acre sculpture park.
An important feature of the exhibit is its custom-drilled perforated metal panels which are semi-transparent and are separated from each other as standing walls that create a "moiré" effect--as a visitor walks past the panels they appear to vibrate. LED lights embedded in the plaza and in the perforated metal panel structure act as a beacon for visitors at evening events. Shining through the perforated structure at night, they render the moiré into a swirling "lava lamp" effect. The light allowed through the perforated metal allows the exhibit to be large, yet unimposing.
Metcalfe Architecture & Design conceived the exhibit. We are a Philadelphia firm of architects and artists and planners. We focus on cultural and academic institutions, buildings and commercial interiors. We are conscious of the elements that make successful spaces. Light and physical comfort, a balance of privacy and community, and opportunities for playfulness are important components of interior and exterior design and contribute to the happiness and productivity of its users.
