Location of application:   Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Pediatric Day Hospital, New York, NY

The Claire Tow Pediatrics Pavilion at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is designed around an urban park concept with the light filled recreation center at the heart of the unit. Natural light is admitted to the space through a 28’x50’ skylight; perforated metal panels suspended beneath the skylight serve to filter the sunlight while retaining the translucence of the glass. During the day this allows views of the surrounding buildings, sky and clouds. With the lights on in the evening, the product becomes opaque and it provides a sense of intimacy and closure to the space.

Every design decision related to the pediatrics project was made with the user in mind. One of the side effects of many chemotherapy treatments is sensitivity to sunlight. The design team was in search of a product that could control the amount of direct sunlight falling into the space while still allowing for the unobstructed views. In addition to supporting the overall design concept of connecting the space to the natural environment, the product also needed to meet flame spread and smoke generation requirements.

After researching a number of materials the design team found that corrugated perforated metal panel met all of the design criteria. Specifically, the team chose to have a .032 smooth perforated aluminum panel with a 1/8” diameter perforation on a 2 1/64” stagger bent 3/4” deep on 6” centers (please see the attached shop drawings for details.) The largest panel was 10’-9” in length by 5’-3” wide. They were also back bent to fit within the existing grid that had previously been erected.
The end result not only met, but exceeded, the Project Team’s vision and the results speak for themselves. The recreation center gives pediatric cancer patients at MSKCC a place to relax and escape from the stressful treatments they endure.
