Location of Application: used to screen parking levels of a mixed use building at 2222 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami FL
Our submission is a 29-story, mixed-use office building proposed along the Biscayne Corridor of Miami, FL. Zoning requirements included shielding or articulating the parking garage levels in such a way that they are not visible from the street. Often times, open parking garages flood the street with fluorescent lighting, car lights, and an uninspired interior. In addition, the building code requires a certain percentage of openings to the exterior to reduce the need for mechanical exhausting. The solution by Gail B. Baldwin, Architect, Inc., the developer and a local high-school student, was a fluid perforated metal screen. As you can see in the attached images, the large base of the structure is almost 13 levels of parking. The zoning code also requires that parking levels are "wrapped" with occupiable spaces for a certain percentage of the façade, thus levels 2 through 5 incorporate live/work studio space. Levels 6 through 13 compose the remainder of the parking structure. In an attempt to mask the less than aesthetically pleasing parking levels, but still maintain an open envelope, perforated metals matched the needs of the project perfectly. The collaboration with the local artist allowed the use of solid and perforated metals to dance away from the building edge, playing with the use of light and function beyond.

Essentially, 8 stories, or approximately 80 vertical feet of the building, is to be wrapped in a perforated metal screen with a simple square design. Mounted over that layer will be applied solid aluminum panels of the artist's design.
