Location of application: Central Florida Commuter Rail Station

Situated on the proposed site of the Central Florida Commuter Rail station in Downtown Orlando, Florida, this design uses the diamond perforated stainless steel panel and pre-cast panel as a brise soleil while also providing enclosure for two railway platforms. The diagram of the panel is reflected in the site design where each platform wall reaches out and embraces the site in two outstretched vees that appear to interlock at the middle of the station. Protection from the elements is provided by large canopies which open up towards the ends of each platform in a sense capturing the movement of the passing trains.

The freestanding nature of the east platform (northbound) allows it to double as the enclosure for an urban pocket park situated between the station and a neighboring parking garage. The pocket park creates the illusion of depth with a subtly articulated ground plane and forced perspective of the tree path. The west platform (southbound) complements this arrangement but with the addition of more perforated panels to filter sunlight from the west. The panel walls are tied together with a light structure on the outside. Moments of this structure are visible through the panel voids. The selection of stainless steel diamond-shape perforated panels allowed the designers to integrate them more closely with the design of the station. Likewise, they provide an elegant and durable
screen element for the railway platforms.
