Digitally fabricated surface
This surface became an exploration of digitally generated patterns as a vehicle for exploring issues of structure, enclosure, light modulation, program, and construction sequencing all to be collectively leveraged in the production of a repetitive system. This system can be understood as the repetition of a unit that when collectively organized
provides or performs a synthesized function.
The inherent nature of the material used allowed for greater flexibilityof each unit and therefore allowed for greater modification of the entire surface. As the surface is modified the amount of anomalies also increase which created varying degrees of interpretation of the surface. These anomalies are not necessarily created by physical modification but can be created by an array of variables (i.e. point of view, direction and intensity of light, size of unit and overall surface).
This surface initially was conceived as a screen wall, interior or exterior that would modulate a person’s vision, but further exploration has produced a greater range of possibilities; anything from a shading device to a simple shadow box.
