Milici Valenti Ng Pack (MVNP)

Milici Valenti Ng Pack (MVNP), one of the largest and most respected advertising agencies in Hawaii, acquired the 21st floor in addition to their 24th floor location in the First Hawaiian Center to accommodate their growth. The significant achievement of their success and expansion coincided with the milestone of their 60th anniversary.
The floor was essentially an empty shell, having been unused since the First Hawaiian Center was built. The scope then was to design the entire 21st floor based on functional requirements while reflecting MVNP's motto "Enemies of the Ordinary." The new space was to accommodate the firm's expansion and to bring Firefly, a partner company previously at a different location, into the same space.
The program requirements were to build out the empty and previously unused space to include the following:
- A reception area
- A variety of conference rooms
- A variety of informal meeting spaces
- Lunch area/cafe
- Open work stations for the creative department
- A variety of multimedia: wireless internet access, plasma TVs throughout, projector & screen
- Audio/visual viewing room
- Separate space for Firefly, a partner company previously at a different location
In keeping with MVNP's motto, "Enemies of the Ordinary", the design concept is based on three major themes:
The Office Tour
To accommodate MVNP's many visitors and to create a stimulating workplace, the layout was developed into an office tour concept. The entire office is a series of visual events that undulate along a counter clockwise path, crafted to create an adventure. The counter clockwise circulation begins when stepping out of the elevator corridor and into the reception area. The rounded soffit in the reception area draws you in and leads you in the direction of the breath taking views beyond the glass-walled conference room, dubbed "the living room". Traveling down the hall, the feature wall for displaying awards forms the corner of the executive conference room. From there, the length of the creative department is defined by a boundary of colorful panels. Arriving at the far end, a cylindrical vestibule, clad in red, perforated metal panels, serves as an "unordinary" design element to transition into the cafe and ocean side.
Media
MVNP's primary business of advertising, communications, and other creative media is conceptually expressed in the design. There are several examples demonstrating the radiating motion of airwaves throughout: the circular soffit in the reception area; the cafe soffits and the negative spaces between them; and the soffit in the executive conference room that emanates downward and outward from the media wall, enveloping people in the space. In keeping with the media-themed design elements, some of the creative department boundary panels have a serif font design mimicking print media.
Mauka (Mountain)/Makai (Ocean)
The design and materials used relate with the overall building concept, which is characterized by mauka and makai themes on opposing facades. The makai facade is cool in tone characterized by glass curtain walls and stainless steel, while the mauka facade uses stone and earth tones. The interior architecture responds to the exterior architectural elements with cool-toned, curvilinear features on the makai side, and earthy materials and angular forms on the mauka side.
