Piura Business Center

Inspired by the nearby river, the new business center in Piura represents an investigation into the phenomenon of liquid reflections. Understanding water as an abstractive lense through which we can view our surroundings was a key starting point in our development of form. Programmatic boxes dictate the inner shape of the structure, while the outer skin seeks to represent the core’s own reflection in the river below. The texture of the perforated steel skin provides a tactile reference to the rough and untamed nature that still exists in the site’s immediate surroundings.
The programmatic arrangement of the building is one driven by environmental factors. Passive cooling and adequate solar control were among the main issues as illustrated by the wind chimney and extensive perforated metal sun screens. Operable windows on both sides of the office space allow for the inhabitants to create their own micro-climates to fit the needs of each office individually. Green roofs minimize the impervious area and limit run-off to the surrounding area while providing recreation spaces for the office patrons.
The metal skin that wraps the “hot” sides of the building has multiple functions. Most importantly, it acts as a sun screen that will regulate heat gain thus reducing the need for air conditioning. The filtered light that comes through the screens will enhance the comfort and well-being of the building’s occupants resulting in higher productivity. The screen is divided into bands relating to the rhythmic flow of the river and also breaks down the scale of the building. The perforated metal skin does not require painting or other treatment thus reducing construction costs.
Our goal as architects was to create an office building that not only meets the requirements of the developer, but also the needs of the future occupants. Each material selected was done so not only to look good, but to provide maximum sustainability. The many energy saving systems will save the owner in operating costs and provide comfortable spaces for occupants. Higher levels of productivity will be the result.
