Paradise Valley Fire Station No. 2

Exterior Application:
Sixteen gauge galvanized perforated metal with ¼” diameter holes at ¾" staggered row centers is used in multiple details on the exterior of the fire station. The perforated metal used on the underside of the entry canopy and south facing shed roof overhangs utilizes a 1” break at panel edges to create an architectural reveal and add structural stability to the overall panel system. Perforated metal vertical infill panels are also used to offer contrast to the triangular structural entry canopy and roof overhang steel outrigger supports.

The galvanized steel perforated metal produces striking effects throughout different times of the day which accent the natural desert surroundings. Along the west side of the building perforated metal canopies provide shade for the exterior patio. These canopies are comprised of a steel channel frame with perforated metal infill panels. The canopy allows some light to filter through, which creates a complex series of shadows that are a combination of the translucent perforated metal with the solid structure of the canopies. These shadows are visible both from the exterior of the building as well as through the large sliding glass doors located off the dining and living room.

The semi transparent canopies offer shade from the hash desert sun while at the same time affording views to the mountain vistas beyond. Despite the visible contrast in shadows, the 40% open area perforated metal strongly diminishes the impact of the solar heat gain inside the building thereby reducing the overall HVAC load requirement.

stairInterior Application:
At the interior of the fire station galvanized perforated metal is used in the ceiling of the lobby as a continuation of the same panel module used on the underside of the exterior entry canopy. The consistent use of the perforated metal panels blurs the boundary between the interior and exterior.
